In 2020 the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction on the Fire Island to Montauk Point Project. The 1.5 billion dollar project was designed to manage the risk of coastal storm damage along Long Island’s Atlantic Coast and includes the mandatory acquisition of a small number of properties, as well as the potential elevation and floodproofing of eligible structures located in the 10% floodplain.

Elevation, also called home raising or home shoring, is the raising of a structure so that the lowest floor is above flood level. USACE guidance for the project requires that the final height of elevation, or the "target design elevation," for structures included in the project meet the standards required by the Federal Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force: two feet above the Base Flood Elevation– the elevation of surface water resulting from a flood that has a 1% chance of equaling or exceeding that level in any given year.

measuring stick is a site-specific sculpture with variable dimensions. In each iteration, it is built to reach the target design elevation for the site in which it is erected. measuring stick takes the form of a box crib: a strong system of timber cross-stacked to support buildings as they are elevated.
